Manchester United Opinion: 2 Herrera replacements United should consider
According to a report from the Daily Record, Ander Herrera has agreed a pre-contract to sign for Paris Saint-Germain this summer after failing to reach a decision over a new long-term deal with Manchester United.
The Spanish midfielder, 29, joined Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao in 2014 and has gone onto make 187 appearances for the Red Devils across five seasons in the Premier League.
United activated a one-year option on Ander Herrera’s initial contract last summer and negotiations over a new deal which started 18 months ago have come to an impasse.
The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and wants a huge hike to his current salary to stay at Manchester United. And the report adds United’s refusal to meet his demands has led to the Spaniard making a decision over his future, with the midfielder agreeing a pre-contract deal with the French champions.
Losing Herrera ahead of next season would be a huge blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was appointed United’s permanent manager last week. With the Spanish midfielder seemingly leaving Old Trafford, Solskjaer has to bring in a player to replace him.
That being said, here are two replacements for Herrera the Red Devils should consider in the summer.
1. Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon)
Tanguy Ndombele has been one of the rising stars in French football, sparking talks of a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United already making a contact with him.
The Frenchman, 22, has enjoyed a wonderful season with Lyon in Ligue 1, impressing with his all-action displays in the middle of the park. He is a box-to-box midfielder, known for his technique, power, stamina and natural athleticism. Ndombele is an excellent ball carrier and possesses the ability to pick a pass.
The former Amiens man can break lines with his passing, halt opposition advances and chip in with the odd goal as well. An energetic and dynamic presence, Ndombele brings a bit of everything and would be an upgrade to Herrera for United.
2. Adrien Rabiot (PSG)
If PSG are believed to have signed Herrera on a pre-contract agreement, United could also do the same by thrashing out a deal for the French club’s outcast, Adrien Rabiot.
His antics off the pitch, high wage demands and multiple clashes with the PSG hierarchy has seen him not feature for the club’s first team since the turn of the year. Available on a free transfer this summer, United should swoop in for the Frenchman.
Rabiot is an intelligent and thoughtful midfielder who excels with his passing and crossing abilities. He can pick a pass, create opportunities for his teammates and burst forward through the middle of the park with energy and intensity.

The France international has been immense for PSG in the past few seasons, and at the age of 23 has his best years still ahead of him. Rabiot, who is linked with a move to Old Trafford, would be a fascinating addition to the United midfield alongside Paul Pogba.
