Manchester United Opinion: Why Thomas Meunier will be a good fit at United

According to a report from The Metro, Manchester United are interested in signing Paris-Saint Germain full-back Thomas Meunier.

The Belgium international, 27, has played 29 times this season across all competitions, supplying with five goals and four assists. The full-back, although, has come regular starts tough to come by this season, with manager Thomas Tuchel preferring the likes of Thilo Kehrer, Dani Alves and Juan Bernat ahead of him.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a mighty summer ahead of him as he plans to rebuild the club to challenge with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title. The Norwegian should prioritise strengthening United’s backline, which has conceded goals at an alarming rate this season. And one aspect of resurrecting the defence will be to bring in a new right-back.

United club captain Antonio Valencia appears to be on his way out of the club, while Ashley Young has been out of depth in the last few weeks. Solskjaer cannot entirely depend on Diogo Dalot, who still needs time to become a regular starter at the club.

That should prompt Solskjaer to sign a right-back at the end of the season and the Red Devils could do well with Thomas Meunier, who has fueled speculation over a move to Manchester United by admitting he’d like to play in the Premier League.

Predominantly a right-back, Meunier can also play at left-back, as a wing-back and right-sided midfielder. He is a little short on pace due to his towering frame but he makes it up with his composure in possession and reading of the game. The 27-year-old is an attack-minded full-back, who likes to venture forward to help out the team.

The Belgium international uses his 6ft 3in frame to great effect, bossing the right flank and has the tactical intelligence coupled with defensive acumen to keep the trickiest opponents at bay. Meunier is an excellent crosser of the ball, which will be highly beneficial for someone like Romelu Lukaku in the opposition box.

Plus, he has bags of experience playing in Europe which only adds more value to his name.

Verdict

The right-back is a key area that United need to improve at the end of the season given their troubles. Meunier has entered the prime years of his career and he now needs a change of scenery to take his game to the next level.
