Manchester United Opinion: Why Lorenzo Pellegrini will be a top fit at United
Manchester United made contact over the potential transfer of Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini this summer, reports Corriere dello Sport. (h/t the Sport Witness)
The Italian, 22, has had an injury-ravaged campaign, despite that he has scored three goals and supplied seven assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. This has apparently led to Manchester United making their interest known to the midfielder, who is available for just €30million – his buy-out clause with the club, adds the report.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started so well at Old Trafford before a significant dip recently, with the Red Devils winning just twice in their last eleven games in all competitions, seven of which have been defeats. The team’s recent results have also seen them miss out a place in the top four, meaning there’ll be no Champions League nights at Old Trafford next campaign.
According to a recent report from the Sun, the Manchester United boss has four new additions at the top of his summer wish list. Solskjaer wants four players over the summer to bolster his squad—a right-back, a right winger and two midfielders.
Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford remains in doubt, while Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are likely to bid their farewells at the end of the season. The Spanish duo are out of contract and can leave on free transfers. United’s summer signing Fred has been a flop and neither Nemanja Matic nor Andreas Pereira have done enough to warrant a regular place in the team next season.
With United in desperate need of quality additions, especially in midfield, Solskjaer would do a brilliant job by signing Lorenzo Pellegrini.
Pellegrini is a versatile player who can play in different positions across the midfield. It is his flexibility that would give Solskjaer a lot of options. A quick, athletic and industrious player, the Italian is a two-footed player, capable of hitting the ball fiercely from distance. He doesn’t possess explosive pace but he keeps the ability to make the driving runs from midfield and shooting.

The 22-year-old distributes the ball well from midfield and has an eye for a killer pass in the final third. Pellegrini can create and score goals, as well as, defend when played in a deeper role and he would be a fantastic fit in Solskjaer’s system at Old Trafford.
Verdict
Pellegrini would be a brilliant signing for United, as he will add a lot of energy and dynamism to Solskjaer’s midfield. That being said, the 20-time Premier League champions should do what is required to sign the highly-rated Italian when the summer transfer window opens.
