Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should sign Nicolo Barella?

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United are set to send scouts to watch Nicolo Barella and Kalidou Koulibaly in Sunday’s Napoli vs Cagliari encounter.

After what has been an underwhelming 2018-18 campaign, Manchester United’s summer recruitment drive seem to be underway, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to rebuild the squad. The 46-year-old is eyeing reinforcements all across the pitch, but special attention should be given to the midfield department over the summer.

Ander Herrera is set to join European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain, after reaching a contract agreement with the Ligue 1 champions, claim RMC Sport. The Spaniard has just a few months left on his contract with Manchester United and will be free to leave the club at the end of the season, leading to strong interest from French champions PSG.

With Herrera’s situation at United not getting resolved, Marouane Fellaini having already left the club in January and Paul Pogba attracting strong interest from Real Madrid, Solskjaer needs to reinforce his midfield options ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. And a player in the mould of Nicolo Barella could boost up the Red Devils’ options in the middle of the park come next season.

Barella, 22, has forged a reputation this season as one of Serie A’s most exciting young talents. He has been a key performer for Cagliari since he broke into the starting XI at the club some few seasons ago. In the current campaign, the midfielder has played 34 times, scoring a goal and three assists.

The Italian is a box-to-box midfielder by trade, known for his passing range, tackling traits and work rate. Barella can be deployed in the No.10 role or just in front of the back four. He excels with his passing and possesses the creativity to split open opposition defences. The 22-year-old is a hardworking and tenacious footballer, who likes to make late runs in the box to score goals.

The Italy international is a fantastic operator of the ball and knows to carry it forward with purpose, making him potentially a vibrant addition to this United side, who have lacked the dynamism and guile in the middle of the park whenever Pogba has endured an off day.
