Man United Opinion: Red Devils should sign Yannick Carrasco

Back in January, the Manchester Evening News reported that Man United were interested in signing former Atletico Madrid star and Belgian international Yannick Carrasco from Chinese club Dalian Yifang, with Premier League rivals Arsenal also expressing an interest in the winger.

A previous report from the Express earlier in the month claimed that Arsenal were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Carrasco in January as the Gunners failed to negotiate a loan deal with the Chinese club.

Carrasco remains intent on returning to Europe after just 12 months in China but he would need to reduce his wage demands significantly.

The 25-year-old earns a staggering £8.8 million-a-year currently in China but the Premier League clubs are unlikely to offer him such terms.

Capable of playing anywhere down the left, Carrasco would be an ideal signing for both Man United and Arsenal in the summer but the Red Devils should look to revisit their interest in the Belgian.

United decided against signing any new players in January but they are likely to dip into the transfer window in the summer to reshape their squad.

United were more focused on bringing in defensive reinforcements earlier in the season but that has changed since Solskjaer’s arrival, with the interim manager looking at new attacking options as well.

The club might be keen to cut their losses on Alexis Sanchez and get the Chilean off their books in the summer to reduce their wage bill. Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Juan Mata are all out of contract in the summer and United would need to replace these players in order to maintain a strong enough squad.

To put things into perspective, the acquisition of a versatile left-sided player like Yannick Carrasco would be a significant boost to United’s squad depth and team dynamics.

Essentially a left-winger by trade, the 25-year-old is also capable of playing as a left wing-back, as evident from his involvement in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

A strong, tenacious and hardworking player with pace, flair and quality on the ball, Carrasco has the stamina to run up and down the pitch to contribute to both defence and attack.

The Belgian uses his sharpness and trickery on the ball to cut inside from the wide areas and create space, which allows him to use his wonderful crossing abilities to good effect.

Carrasco moves the ball around quickly and uses short and quick exchanges to link up with his teammates, whilst also having a penchant for playing defence-splitting passes to set up goalscoring chances. He is a truly two-footed player which makes it easy for him weigh up his options in the attacking third, often fancying shots on goal from outside the box.

Carrasco would be the ideal man to provide cover and competition for someone like Anthony Martial who often plays as a wide forward down the left.

Given that Solskjaer has often opted for a back-three system with two wing-backs, Carrasco’s presence would undoubtedly be a massive boost for United. Moreover, the Belgian has the quality on the ball to change games and United can certainly do with another impact player in their squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stabilised things at Old Trafford after a tumultuous period under Jose Mourinho and it is now time for the Red Devils to consolidate on their newly-found form in a bid to bring back the glory of the yesteryears.

They certainly need new players to bolster their squad in the summer and Yannick Carrasco Ferreira might just be the perfect signing to solve their left-wing conundrum.
