Why Manchester City must replace Guardiola with Brendan Rodgers
Pep Guardiola has been in charge of Manchester City since 2016. Prior to this, Guardiola managed Barcelona for four seasons and Bayern Munich for three years.
Interestingly enough, City are monitoring Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers as they consider him as a replacement for Pep Guardiola once the Catalan boss leaves the club, according to the Sun.
Rodgers has become highly sought-after due to his success at Celtic and Leicester City. Thus, the Citizens’ interest does not really come as a surprise.
The former Liverpool boss has guided the Foxes to second place in the Premier League table, 4 points above Guardiola’s side. Rodgers has assembled a young group of players and they are playing an exciting brand of attacking football under his tutelage. He also possesses valuable experience in title races and the Champions League.
While Rodgers failed to deliver silverware at Anfield, the Northern Irish native was hugely successful in Scotland, winning seven major trophies.
Guardiola has been a revolutionary coach at City, winning back-to-back league titles and cleaning up in the English domestic cup competitions. The ex-Bayern Munich man has successfully formed one of the greatest teams that the Premier League has ever seen but his players have failed to live up to the high expectations this season. As a result, their title ambitions are hanging by a thread.
Rodgers plays a similar style of football to Pep and he is capable of taking over the team without making too many changes.
City have not started the season well. Although the team won the Community Shield, the start to the Premier League has left the Sky Blues with the tall order of overcoming Liverpool’s lead at the top. This time, the Reds look unstoppable.
Guardiola’s fourth season at Barca was his least prolific and at Bayern as well, things went from bad to worse towards the end.
Barca went from being an unbelievable outfit which won everything in the 2008-09 season and almost everything in 2010-11 to just winning the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup in his fourth season.
Now that he is in his fourth campaign with City, it remains to be seen if they are open to retaining him further. Rodgers, on the other hand, is having a fantastic season at Leicester. His aggressive style of play has propelled the Foxes to second in the table. If Guardiola leaves City, appointing Rodgers as his successor will be a no-brainer.
