Why Manchester City should plot a move for Sandro Tonali
As per Corriere dello Sport (h/t MEN), Manchester City are interested in signing Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali in the summer.
Tonali, 19, came through the ranks of Brescia’s youth academy and was promoted to the club’s senior side in January 2018. Since then, he has been a regular member of the team and has been impressive in the last two campaigns.
The teenager was instrumental in the club’s promotion to Serie A at the end of last season. In 34 games, he racked up 3 goals and 7 assists last term, despite featuring as a defensive midfielder and is highly-rated. His impressive performances also earned a call up to the national squad as he made his debut for Italy last October.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have not been effective in defending the league title as they are 25 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool. Though they have been excellent in the Champions League so far, they have been inconsistent throughout the campaign.
Their defensive unit has not been up to the mark due to the long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte and the failure to replace Vincent Kompany. At the same time, their midfield has not been dominant, except for Kevin De Bruyne.
Brazilian international Fernandinho was deployed in a different position for the majority of the season and the midfield has struggled to cope without his presence. Rodri was signed in the summer as a deputy for Fernandinho, but the Spaniard hasn’t lived up to the expectations. Hence, City boss Pep Guardiola has to bring in reinforcements to the midfield to improve in the next season.
With the departure of David Silva on the horizon, they would be short of options in the midfield ranks at the end of the campaign. Therefore, they should look to strengthen their squad by signing the Italian Teenager Sandro Tonali as early as this summer.
The 19-year-old has made waves in the Serie A this term, featuring in 23 games for Brescia. In the process, he has scored one goal and has provided 5 assists and is a vital cog in the team’s midfield.
A defensive midfielder by trade, Tonali is also capable of making an impact in the team’s attack. He is known for his all-round ability and has a strong character which is essential to play at a higher level.
The Italian international is one of the most exciting teenagers and has the ability to succeed at the top. He has shown his qualities that belie his tender age and could be crucial for City, if he is able to develop himself and continue with the same form.

Verdict
Tonali is just 19 and can be a perfect fit for Guardiola’s side. Fernandinho has just one year left on his contract with the club and they need to replace the veteran. City should make sure they avoid the mistake of not replacing their stars.
Therefore, they should go all out in their attempt to sign the Italian in the summer and lure him to Etihad.
