Why Manchester City should offload Angelino permanently

While speaking to Eurosport (h/t Manchester Evening News ), Angelino hinted that he would prefer to stay at RB Leipzig than return to Manchester City.

The Manchester City left-back is currently on loan with Bundesliga side Leipzig following a loan move from the Premier League side in January. Angelino has made an instant impact since arriving in Germany, scoring one goal and assisting twice from eight games across all competitions before play stopped due to the coronavirus crisis.

The 23-year-old Spaniard was re-signed by Manchester City just last summer after spending a year at PSV Eindhoven. However, Angelino has spent just six months on his return to the Etihad before he was once again offloaded in January in a bid to get more regular action.

No room for Angelino at Manchester City

Despite proving himself at the highest level in Holland, Angelino once again found himself warming the benches after City signed him last summer. The presence of Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko in the City set-up saw Angelino share the left-back duties along with the other two this season.

Among the three, Angelino came last in the pecking order under boss Pep Guardiola, featuring just six times in the Premier League this term. With game time getting increasingly limited at the Etihad despite just signing for them a few months back, Angelino saw himself being offloaded to Leipzig during the winter transfer window.

However, things seemed to have changed a little bit for Angelino since arriving in Germany, with the left-back even playing a crucial role in Leipzig’s Champions League win over last year’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spaniard finally seems to be enjoying his football, where he has become a regular presence unlike at City. Moreover, with first-choice left-back Mendy making a return into the side following a series of injuries, and Zinchenko waiting in line, Angelino’s chances of getting regular time look increasingly less in the coming days.

Hence, it would be wise of City to let go of their unwanted man, who does not seem to be in their manager’s plans at the moment.

Verdict

Manchester City already have two left-backs in their side – one of the primary reasons why Angelino was sent on loan to Leipzig in January. Hence, it is clear that he is surplus to requirements at the Etihad. Manchester City could save themselves some money and time by selling him permanently than keeping him in the side.
