Liverpool Opinion: Why Pascal Gross will be a superb fit for the Reds?

Brighton playmaker Pascal Gross has admitted that he was flattered to be linked with a summer switch to Liverpool.

The German, 27, joined the Seagulls from Ingolstadt in the summer of 2017 and has been an integral part of Chris Hughton’s side over the last two seasons in the Premier League. His tally of seven goals and eight assists helped Brighton to safety in their first ever Premier League campaign in 2017/18.

This campaign, though, Pascal Gross has played slightly deeper for the sea coast side and due to some injury problems has made only 18 appearances, scoring just twice.

The Daily Mirror claimed in December that Liverpool were planning a £15 million for the 27-year-old; however, the Reds didn’t make any concrete offer for the midfielder and Gross, as expected, stayed at the Amex.

But main question arises here—should Liverpool reignite their interest in the Brighton star this summer?

Liverpool are battling with Manchester City for the Premier League title this season, with only one point differentiating both the sides. The Reds arguably have the best attack in the Premier League but they have lacked creativity in key areas at times this campaign.

Klopp is yet to sign a replacement for Philipp Coutinho, who left Anfield for Barcelona last January. This summer transfer window could be the perfect time for the Liverpool manager to replace Coutinho by adding a creative midfielder to his ranks.

Gross is a creative midfielder, known for his vision and ability to unlock tightest of defences with killer through balls. The German schemer needs space to operate and create openings for his teammates.

He lacks pace and isn’t the quickest of players in the league that can take on defenders and beat them but he compensates that with his shrewd passing and ability to knit play between the midfield and the attack.

The former Ingolstadt man is purely a no.10 who likes to pick up pockets of spaces in the opposition half and deliver some inviting crosses in the box. He is a tireless worker that makes him an excellent fit for Klopp’s style of play at the Anfield.

Furthermore, Gross is an expert set-piece taker and that coupled with his other attributes would only potentially make him a perfect replacement for Coutinho.

Conclusion

The Reds have struggled to break down teams that have defended deep this season. Therefore, signing a player in the mould of Gross will bring more fluency to Liverpool’s play in the final third, whilst adding further depth to the squad.

He could be an inspired signing for the Merseysiders in their bid to challenge for trophies in the coming years.
