Why Joe Rodon could be a fantastic signing for Leicester City

According to the Daily Mail, Leicester City are among a host of clubs to have watched Swansea City defender Joe Rodon. It is reported that Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Bournemouth have also been keeping tabs on the Wales international, with Manchester City monitoring the player too.

Joe Rodon, 22, has recently returned to Steve Cooper’s starting XI after suffering from an ankle injury he picked up in October. His recent performances have earned him a senior call up by Wales manager Ryan Giggs, making his international debut in September. The defender is expected to feature in Wales’ upcoming friendlies against Austria and USA next month, the report adds.

Meanwhile, Leicester City have enjoyed a really good campaign under Brendan Rodgers. They are currently third in the table, aiming to bring Champions League football to King Power Stadium next season.

The Foxes boast of a brilliant defensive record in the division, having conceded just 26 goals in 25 games despite selling star defender Harry Maguire to Manchester United in the summer. Following Maguire’s departure, Caglar Soyuncu has stepped up and formed a strong partnership at the back with Jonny Evans.

Rodgers strengthened his defensive options in January by bringing in Ryan Bennett on loan from Wolves until the end of the season. With Filip Benkovic out on loan at Bristol City, Bennett only at the King Power Stadium until June and Wes Morgan turning 36 last month, the Leicester boss should prioritise bolstering his defence before next season.

Hence, the Foxes must make a move for Joe Rodon. The 22-year-old was sidelined for three months by an ankle injury this term but recently returned to action. He was back in the starting line-up for Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Preston North End and had a really good game for Swansea.

Rodon made his Wales debut in September, helping the team to a 2-1 win over Azerbaijan in a Euro 2020 qualifier. He’s already won two caps for the Welsh national team. At the age of 22, the Welshman is a defender with potential and desire to improve.

Verdict

The Swansea defender has returned strongly from injury and there are chances of him establishing himself at a higher level under the guidance of a smart tactician like Rodgers. Hence, Leicester must secure Rodon’s services in the summer.
