Why Leicester should sign Adam Lallana on a free transfer in the summer

According to Sky Sports, Leicester City have made an initial approach to Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana’s representatives over a free transfer this summer.

The Englishman, 31, who signed for Liverpool from Southampton for £25m in 2014 is out of contract this summer and is highly unlikely that he’ll be offered a new deal by the Merseyside club. (h/t BBC) Adam Lallana has played only 13 times for the Reds in the Premier League this season, scoring once.

The 31-year-old is currently free to negotiate and sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club prior to the end of his current deal at Anfield. However, the report claims that Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to sign Lallana on a free transfer this summer.

Rodgers has done a fantastic job in his first full season at Leicester City, with the Midlands side currently placed third in the table. They have played some exciting football over the course of the season, with attacking players like Jamie Vardy, Harvey Barnes, Ayoze Perez, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans linking up in the best possible way and scoring plenty of goals.

With 12 league games remaining, the Foxes will do everything possible to secure a place in the Champions League next season. Rodgers will definitely need a bigger squad next season to compete in Europe as well as in domestic competitions. Thus, the Northern Irish tactician should beef up his squad in the summer by signing some players. One player Leicester must sign is Adam Lallana.

Lallana’s time at Anfield has been hampered by injuries in the past two seasons, as he has managed only 31 appearances combined in all competitions. This season, the England midfielder’s impact has come largely in cup games or off the bench, with his sole Premier League goal coming against Manchester United at Old Trafford to keep the Reds unbeaten, and his only assist coming at home to Wolves in December.

Rodgers knows Lallana very well, having brought him to Liverpool in the first place, back in 2014 from Southampton. Lallana is a versatile player who can play in different positions across midfield and attack. His versatile nature could add value to the Foxes squad.

Furthermore, the former Southampton star has also got his fair share of experience at the international level, having played in 34 matches for England while scoring three goals in the process.

Verdict

Leicester can benefit from acquiring a versatile, proven Premier League player like Lallana. Even though he is 31 and has had plenty of injury problems at Liverpool, he would be a smart signing for the Foxes on a free transfer in the summer, purely due to his experience at the highest level.
