Leeds United Opinion: Why the Whites should sign Matej Vydra from Burnley?

According to a report from the Sun, Leeds United are planning a swoop for Burnley misfit, Matej Vydra. (h/t Lancs Live)

The Czech Republic forward, 27, joined Burnley from Derby County last summer but failed to make an impact in the Premier League. And after just one season, the Clarets are ready to let the 27-year-old leave the club and are hoping to recoup around £10 million for the player, the report adds.

Interestingly, Leeds United were very much interested in signing Matej Vydra from Derby, only for the move to fall through over personal terms. Despite scoring only once in 13 Premier League games this past season, the Whites must splash big to sign the forward this summer.

After coming so close and missing out on promotion last season, Leeds boss manager Marcelo Bielsa has to plot his summer moves very carefully. The Whites will be looking to go one step further in their quest for Premier League football next season and for that they’ll need reinforcements over the summer.

Bielsa will have learned a lot about his side last season, and he will know that his side often lacked firepower in the final third of the pitch. Kemar Roofe shouldered the responsibility of scoring goals and without his presence up front, Leeds lacked an out-and-out goalscorer. Patrick Bamford struggled to make an impact in his debut season at Elland Road, while the creative Pablo Hernandez blew hot and cold.

The Argentinean tactician needs to find a player that can share the goalscoring burden with the likes of Roofe and Bamford next season. That being said, Matej Vydra could be a brilliant fit for the Yorkshire giants.

Vydra is a proven Championship goalscorer, finishing as top scorer in 2017/18 campaign with 21 goals for Derby. That earned him a move to Burnley and while things haven’t panned out the way he would have liked it, the Czech remains a potent forward who’ll certainly help Leeds in their cause next season.

The 27-year-old’s versatility to play up front or behind a striker should be appealing to Bielsa. He has a natural knack for goal and his record in the Championship is phenomenal, to say the least. Vydra knows where the net is and at 27, he has perhaps entered the prime years of his career.

Verdict

It would be a major statement of intent by the Whites if they manage to sign Vydra from Burnley this summer, and one that should definitely put Bielsa’s side in good stead to win promotion next term.
