Why Daniel James would be a useful signing for Leeds United

According to The Sun, Leeds United are ready to return for Manchester United winger Daniel James. The club tried to and almost signed him in January 2019, only for Swansea to pull the plug on the deal in the 11th hour.

However, the Whites are now ready to rekindle their interest in the Welshman and try to snap him up in the ongoing transfer window. (h/t The Sun)

Profile

Daniel James is a 22-year-old Welsh winger who plays for Manchester United. His youth career began at Hull City in 2006. Eight years later, he joined Swansea’s youth academy. A loan deal to Shrewsbury Town was agreed but failing to get games, the deal was terminated within 2 months. He made his way into the Swans’ senior team in 2018 and played a huge part that season. Featuring in 38 games, he scored 5 times and assisted 10 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Manchester United signed him ahead of the 2019-20 season. He had a bright start to his Old Trafford stint but faded off as the season progressed. Playing 47 games last season, he scored 4 goals and provided 7 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt).

James is a regular presence in the Wales national team after featuring through the youth sides on a consistent basis.

Would he be a useful signing?

Leeds may be well-stocked in attack but they have just the one player who is a natural left-winger. Jack Harrison, who is on loan from Manchester City, is the only recognised left-sided winger in the whole squad. So adding another wide player to the ranks would be a smart move by Marcelo Bielsa & co.

James has looked off colour at Old Trafford mainly due to being deployed out of position on the right-wing. In the opening matches, he looked much better when starting from the left. Even though his form tailed off towards the end of the season, James showed that he can be handful to deal with, early in the campaign.

Verdict

With such dearth on the left-wing, signing James makes a lot of sense for Leeds. The Whites would benefit a lot from his pace and acceleration. He already has gathered Premier League experience and can be a regular on the left side at Elland Road, something that is not possible at his current club.
