Liverpool Opinion: Why the Reds must reignite their interest in Nabil Fekir?
Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has urged Jurgen Klopp to consider reigniting interest in Lyon star Nabil Fekir in the summer transfer window.
The Reds failed to secure the services of the French playmaker last summer, but discussion broke down over medical concerns. Nabil Fekir has gone on to become a World Cup winner while remaining a talismanic presence at Lyon, registering nine goals and seven assists in 29 Ligue 1 games this season.
Mark Lawrenson, who won four titles with Liverpool, feels Fekir could be an ideal addition to Klopp’s squad next season. But should Klopp listen to Lawrenson’s piece of advice?
Liverpool fell a point short of fulfilling their Premier League title dream in 2018-19, but can still finish the season with major silverware as their attention shifts to a Champions League final date with Tottenham. Irrespective of what happens in the Champions League, the Reds will need to strengthen their squad to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, who have been big spenders in recent transfer windows.
The Merseysiders are yet to bring in a replacement for Philippe Coutinho even though they rarely felt his absence this season. Klopp needs a forward to ease the pressure off of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. The signing of Fekir will give Liverpool more than just a back-up and Klopp shouldn’t think twice in making a move for him in the summer.
Fekir has enjoyed a solid season with Lyon in the Ligue 1, although he hasn’t hit the heights of last campaign. The 25-year-old is considered as one of the brightest playmakers in French football, known for his excellent passing range and ability to carve open defences with his creativity. His energy to drive his team forward and passing abilities are second to nothing, while he is also a fantastic finisher in front of goal.
The Frenchman is excellent in linking up play with his fellow forwards and his intelligent movement off the ball always keeps the defenders on their toes. A deadly customer from set-pieces, Fekir has a lethal left foot with which he has scored some worldies in Ligue 1 till date.

Also, his versatility to play in different attacking positions will give Klopp a lot of options in the squad.
