Early Life

McKissic was born on August 15, 1993, in Phenix City, Alabama, and attended Central High School. Three-star wide receiver recruit McKissic chose Arkansas State over Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina. He played college football at Arkansas State, where he set a Sun Belt Conference record with 289 career receptions.

College career

As a multi-position player, he started all but three games for the Arkansas State Red Wolves. As a redshirt freshman in 2012, he had 103 receptions, a school record, 1,022 yards receiving, was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, and was a Scripps Freshman All-American. After tying a school record with 11 receptions, 113 yards, and a touchdown against Kent State, he was named offensive MVP in the Go-Daddy Bowl. His four 100-yard receiving games were tied for third most in an Arkansas State season, and his 12 receptions tied for third-most in a game twice.

Over the next three years, his receiving yardage dropped (500-700 yards), but he was used more as a running back and return specialist. In ‘Sports Illustrated,’ he was named All-American Honorable Mention, and he was on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. In three different positions, he was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference team. He was named a Sun Belt All-Conference wide receiver and all-purpose player for the third time his senior year after accumulating 525 yards receiving 112 yards rushing, and 654 kickoff return yards (5th all-time) including a school record with 211 in game 7 against Toledo, and his second touchdown. He was injured early in the New Orleans Bowl, but he still managed three receptions for 26 yards, three rushes for 25 yards, a 9-yard completed pass, and an 18-yard kickoff return against Louisiana Tech. 

He was named to the all-Arkansas State team in 2017. He had 289 receptions for 2,838 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career, as well as 53 kickoff returns for 1,473 yards and a 27.8-yard average.

Following his undrafted status in the 2016 NFL Draft, McKissic signed with the Atlanta Falcons. His initial contact in the NFL was a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Washington Redskins in a preseason game. McKissic was released by the Falcons as part of the team’s final roster cuts on September 3, 2016, and the following day he was added to the practice squad. On December 16, 2016, he was added to the active roster before being released three days later.

On December 20, 2016, the Seattle Seahawks claimed McKissic off waivers He made his NFL debut in Week 17 against the 49ers, recording two receptions for 16 yards. He had four carries for 38 yards ( which included a 30-yard touchdown on his second career carry ) and a 27-yard touchdown reception against Indianapolis in Week 4 of the 2017 campaign. He concluded the 2017 campaign with 266 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns, 34 receptions, and 187 rushing yards. McKissic suffered a foot injury and was put on an injured reserve on September 3, 2018. On November 28, 2018, he was brought out of the injured reserve. McKissic was released on 31 August 2019, as part of the final roster cuts.

The Detroit Lions picked up McKissic off waivers on September 13. McKissic racked up 38 carries for 205 rushing yards in the 2019 season, along with 34 receptions for 233 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown in the 16 games he played. He started three out of the 16 games.

McKissic agreed to terms with the Washington Football Team on a two-year contract on March 26, 2020, prior to the team’s name change later that offseason. McKissic had 107 yards rushing and a receiving touchdown in a Week 15 loss to his former team, the Seattle Seahawks. 

McKissic, a free agent in 2022, agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract with the Buffalo Bills before accepting the same offer from Washington. McKissic was placed on injured reserve on November 19, 2022, after missing Weeks 9 and 10 because of a neck injury.
