Colin Farrell is both an accomplished actor and champion of gay rights. He has appeared in movies like Minority Report and Crazy Heart as well as various stage plays.

He also wrote an open letter in Ireland’s Sunday World, asking the country to vote in favour of marriage equality. This issue hits home as his brother is gay and had to leave Ireland for Canada in order to get married there.

While the Irishman has advocated for gay rights, he has had relationships with several female stars. Colin Farrell is straight and has dated Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Narain, Demi Moore, Amelia Warner and more.

However, here is a list of all he has done for gay rights or has spoken about it.

1. He is a supporter of gay rights

Colin Farrell has long been an advocate of gay rights and issued an impassioned plea for same-sex marriage in Ireland.

The actor wrote an open letter for Sunday World newspaper recalling Eamon Farrell Jr’s experiences of homophobic bullying as well as criticizing government policy that prevented Eamon and his husband from getting married within their homeland but forced them instead to wed in Canada. For those not in the know, Eamon Jr is Colin’s brother.

Here are a few excerpts from Farrell’s article on Sunday World (h/t ABC):

“But he was always proud of who he was. Proud and defiant and, of course, provocative,” he continued. “Even when others were casting him out with fists and ridicule and the laughter of pure loathsome derision, he maintained an integrity and dignity that flew in the face of the cruelty that befell him.”

The actor also spoke about several other issues in the country as they headed for a referendum in May 2015.

Farrell issued this statement ahead of the country’s upcoming referendum to legalize same-sex marriage. Additionally, he reiterated his support for beLonG To – a Dublin youth service which tackles homophobic bullying – as well as campaigned on numerous chatshows for gay rights group BeLonG To.

2. He is a supporter of same-sex marriage

Colin Farrell stands up for a cause when it counts. A passionate supporter of gay rights, and strongly condemning antigay bullying. Colin appeared recently on Irish talk show Claire Byrne Live to talk about marriage equality; explaining his support due to personal experience.

His brother Eamon is openly gay and married Steven Mannion from Canada in 2009. According to Steven, Eamon has been subjected to bullying over his sexual orientation as well as having had his life negatively impacted by anti-gay legislation in Ireland.

Regarding the legislation in Ireland, Farrell also mocked the stance of the Catholic Church.
