Manchester City player ratings vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester City came away with all three points from their matchday three fixture of the Champions League against Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Citizens took a 2-0 lead at the halfway mark courtesy of strikes from David Silva and Aymeric Laporte within a space of five minutes.

Pep Guardiola’s men continued their stranglehold on the game and Bernardo Silva came off the bench to seal the game for the Premier League table toppers.

With back-to-back wins over Hoffenheim and Shakhtar, Manchester City have certainly boosted their chances of making it to the last 16 after that opening day debacle against Lyon.

Player Ratings

Ederson Moraes (7/10)

Did not have too much to do as City dictated the proceedings but did the job when called into action; gave the fans a lot to cheer about with his eccentric approach.

John Stones (7/10)

Looked comfortable in his unfamiliar right-back position; calm in possession and made a couple of crunching challenges.

Nicolas Otamendi (7.5/10)

Used his physicality to outmuscle the opposition and headed away from the crosses with supreme authority, made some good tackles as well.

Aymeric Laporte (8/10)

Controlled his header brilliantly from de Bruyne’s corner to double City’s lead; comfortable with the ball at his feet and always a reliable presence at the back.

Benjamin Mendy (6.5/10)

Caused the opposition a lot of problems with his pacy and powerful runs down the left but the end product wasn’t great.

Fernandinho (7/10)

Played in his usual deep role in the midfield and cut out the attacks from the centre of the park; kept the ball moving but did not contribute too much up front.

Kevin de Bruyne (7.5/10)

Worked hard upon his return from injury and influenced proceedings with some neat touches; wasn’t at his very best but still claimed an assist.

David Silva (8.5/10)

Another magical performance by the little Spaniard. Kept the defenders on their toes with his neat, sharp and incisive passing and contributed a lot to the build-up play; scored the opener with a beautiful volley.

Riyad Mahrez (6.5/10)

Not the best of performances from the Algerian. Looked wayward with his decision-making in front of goal and squandered two great chances.

Raheem Sterling (7/10)

He made some pacy runs down the flanks and threatened to tear apart the opposition’s defense; stayed wide to make space for his teammates, a tidy performance overall.

Gabriel Jesus (6.5/10)

Hasn’t scored for a long time and that showed in his body language. He ran around tirelessly and contributed to the build-up play but wasn’t particularly threatening.
