Arsenal Opinion: Gunners should sign Markus Schubert as a replacement for Petr Cech

According to claims from German outlet Bild, as cited by Metro, Arsenal have identified Dynamo Dresden goalkeeper Markus Schubert as a potential replacement for Petr Cech.

Cech is set to hang up his boots after the Europa League final against his former club Chelsea and the 37-year-old’s imminent departure has forced the Gunners to look for potential reinforcements in their options between the sticks.

Metro understands that Markus Schubert, 20, is out of contract at Dynamo Dresden and has expressed his desire to move on in the summer window, meaning that Arsenal would be able to snap him up for free.

Schubert became the youngest goalkeeper in Dynamo Dresden’s history when he made his debut as a 17-year-old back in 2015 but the German is disappointed with the club’s failure to challenge for promotion to the Bundesliga, the Metro understands.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper enjoyed his first full season in the first-team this term and caught the eye with his consistently solid performances between the sticks in the German second-tier, managing 9 clean sheets in 31 league appearances for Dresden, who finished 12th in the standings.

Schubert is highly-rated in German football and has represented his nation at all youth levels starting from U-17 to U-21, accumulating a total of 20 caps in the process, although he is yet to make his senior international bow. The 20-year-old has made a total of 43 appearances for Dresden in all competitions till date, keeping 12 clean sheets in the process.

The youngster registered a total of 97 saves in the league this term, 60 of which came from inside the penalty area. He averaged 3.2 saves per game with a shot-saved percentage of 70, which is certainly very impressive for a goalkeeper of his age.

Schubert committed 4 errors that led to goals but that is again very normal for a young goalkeeper and he continues to be one of the brightest emerging goalkeeping talents in German football.

To put things into perspective, Arsenal have every reason to look at Markus Schubert as a replacement for Petr Cech and a viable back-up for No.1 Bernd Leno. The Gunners can, indeed, spend a sizeable amount to bring in another experienced goalkeeper but Schubert looks like a real talent and grooming him for the future certainly makes sense.

Even if the move materializes, Schubert would need to impress manager Unai Emery to get a look in for the domestic cup games next season.

He boasts of high levels of agility and sharp reflexes between the sticks, but given that he hasn’t tasted top-flight football yet, the youngster would probably need time to acclimatise to English football.

Arsenal have Emiliano Martinez as a good back-up in their ranks but the Argentine hasn’t had much playtime over the course of his eight-year stay in north London. However, he has proven his worth on loan numerous times and Emery should relish the luxury of having an experienced option in the goalkeeping department.
