Roger Federer has 20 Grand Slams to his name before Wimbledon 2021 but how many times has he won the Big W in his career?

Roger Federer is gunning to win his 9th Wimbledon title (in 2021) at SW19 as he returns after the heartbreak of the 2019 final against Novak Djokovic.

The Swiss is considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the game and has broken record along the way. He is dubbed the “King of Grass” after an absolutely dominant spell at the courts in London.

Federer won the last of his 20 Grand Slams at the 2018 Australian Open beating Marin Cilic in the final. He has since then undergone double knee surgery keeping him out of action for over a year.

He comes into this year’s Wimbledon, after a roller-coaster of a comeback season in 2021. Federer goes into Wimbledon, having made a shock exit at the hands of young star Felix Auger Aliassime losing 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.

His preparation at the Grand Slam level is at Roland Garros, where he won his first three matches before withdrawing citing fitness concerns. In his third round match, he battled against German Dominik Koepfer for 4 and a half hours, before winning in 4 sets.

The Swiss is the first man in history to reach 20 Grand Slams. His tally includes a record-breaking 8 Wimbledon crowns. Federer has reached a record 31 Grand Slam singles finals, 23 consecutive semifinal appearances and 36 consecutive quarterfinal appearances.

The Swiss also has been World No. 1 for 310 weeks. His titles at Wimbledon came in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2017.

2003 – The start of Federer’s Wimbledon love affair

In 2003, Federer went past the first round for the first time in five attempts. His win ended the 31-match streak of Pete Sampras by knocking him out in the fourth round. His wins against Mardy Fish, Sjeng Schalken and Andy Roddick took him to his first ever Grand Slam final.

In the final was Australian Mark Philippoussis. The 21-year old Swiss displayed a scintillating performance to win in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (3). This is the first title of the eight Federer owns.

2017 Wimbledon – the Undisputed King of Wimbledon

The comeback in 2017 is still one of the greatest in tennis history. However, Federer was not a favourite after missing out more than half of the previous season. His incredible season boasts the 2017 Australian Open including a 5-set thriller in the final against Rafael Nadal.

His game was on another level at SW 19 as he dispatched off Milos Raonic and Tomas Berdych along the way. He reached the final to face Croatian Marin Cilic, who seemed in impressive form in the tournament.

Federer beat an injured Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in the final to win his 19th overall Grand Slam title.

2009 Wimbledon – A Record-Breaking Final

In 2009, Federer returned to Wimbledon after a painful loss to Rafael Nadal in the previous year’s final. He put a consistent display throughout the two weeks and met American Andy Roddick in the final. The Swiss was coming off completing a career Grand Slam and was hoping to add to his Wimbledon tally.

The Swiss ace outlasted Roddick 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 in a marathon match to equal a long standing record.

The match-winning performance also brought Roger Federer level with Pete Sampras’ record of 15 Grand Slam titles.

Federer is on his final leg as a professional tennis player as he enters the 2021 Wimbledon. However, he faces a tough challenge to win his 9th Wimbledon title with a tough draw.
