Walter Hahn aka Gunther is an Austrian professional wrestler and trainer. He is the currently Intercontinental Champion. Hahn has appeared in several independent promotions around the world, predominantly wrestling as Walter.
He was born in Austria, but he moved to Germany when he was 20 years old due to his ex-wife’s transfer to the country. He joined wXw and started wrestling there. Because of his excellent skills, he started getting offers to wrestle in England and America.
Gunther has been in the wrestling business for 17 years now. He wrestled his first match back in 2005 at IWA Switzerland Explosion. In a tag team match against Adam Polak and Baron Von Hagen, he teamed up with SigMasta Rappo.
Walter made his Westside Xtreme Wrestling debut on May 4, 2007, in a match that also involved Atsushi Aoki, Adam Polak, and Tengkwa. He defeated Zack Sabre Jr. to win the wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship on October 2, 2010, in Oberhausen, Germany. He became three-time wXw Unified World Wrestling Champion and a former one-time PWG World Champion as well.
Gunther started his wrestling by the name of Big Van Walter. Vader inspired it. He told once in an interview that he got this name after returning from Japan in 2006; he did a few shows in Austria, and during one of these shows, a promoter gave this nickname to him.
Overall, Walter is a five-time world champion in wrestling including the Progress Unified World Champion. Then he stepped into WWE and became the first Austrian to do so. After signing with WWE in early 2019, he debuted on the NXT UK brand before moving over to the primary NXT brand in 2022, where his ring name was changed to Gunthar.
He is a former NXT United Kingdom Champion for which he holds the record for the longest reign at 870 days, which is the longest championship reign in WWE history since 1988. On the 10 June episode of SmackDown, Gunther defeated Ricochet to win the Intercontinental Championship, making him the first Austrian to win the title.
