Everton Opinion: Toffees have struck gold by tying Tom Davies down to a new deal

According to The Independent, Tom Davies has signed a new four-year deal with Everton, which should keep him at Goodison Park until the summer of 2023.

The 20-year-old has made a total of 19 appearances for Everton in all competitions, including 16 in the Premier League, and also set the record for being the club’s youngest ever captain when he skippered the Toffees in a Carabao Cup tie against Rotherham United back in August 2018.

Davies has also donned the captain’s armband in Everton’s Premier League victories over Leicester City and Fulham this season and the club has sent a clear statement of intent by tying him down to a new four-year contract.

The 20-year-old, who made his first-team debut against Southampton in the Premier League back in 2016, is undoubtedly one of the brightest prospects to have emerged from the club’s youth academy in recent years.

The fact that he has successfully managed to make the jump from the youth and reserve level up to the first-team at such a young age speaks volumes of his talent and potential as a player. Davies has made a total of 89 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions till date, scoring 4 goals and assisting a further 6.

A regular for England at all youth levels up to U21, Davies has accumulated a total of 51 caps for the Three Lions, though he is yet to make his senior international debut.

Davies played an important role in the Premier League under former manager Ronald Koeman but the youngster has enjoyed a bit-part role under Marco Silva, partly due to the form of Andre Gomes and Idrissa Gana Gueye in central midfield.

To put things into perspective, it would be fair to say that Everton have taken a step in the right direction by securing Tom Davies’ long-term future at the club. The Toffees have a history of getting the best out of the young players at the club by providing them with controlled exposure and Davies is likely to play a massive role at Goodison Park in the years to come.

Having captained the club on so many occasions at such a tender age, he is already a firm fan favourite and the club faithful have every reason to look at him as the next designated club-captain after the retirement of Phil Jagielka. Yes, he is one of Everton’s own, having been associated with the club for the last decade or so.

The decision to offer him a new deal in an indication that Everton are willing to bank on their academy products to propel the club to greater heights in the Premier League.

Looking at things from the player’s point of view, Everton is the ideal place for him to continue his development and hone his skills. He probably wouldn’t have played so much at such a young age if he was at a top-six club like Man United or Arsenal.

In all honesty, Davies has done enough to earn this new deal, showing plenty of commitment and intent whenever he has been on the pitch. He is someone who always gives his 100 per cent every time he is called upon. His versatility to play in both holding and attacking roles in the midfield is an asset to the club’s team dynamics.

The 20-year-old is still in the developmental phase of his career and one would expect him to establish himself as a first-team regular in the next couple of years.
