Aleksandar Mitrovic would be the perfect back up for Harry Kane at Spurs

According to a current report from the TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing Aleksandar Mitrovic in the January transfer window but the Lilywhites were unsuccessful in pursuit of the towering Serbian centre-forward.

The same report adds that the north Londoners were ready to pay £27 million for Mitrovic but Fulham were not ready to part ways with their prized asset.

Signed from Newcastle permanently at the start of the ongoing campaign following a successful loan spell in the Championship last season, Mitrovic has been one of the brightest sparks of Fulham’s otherwise lacklustre season in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has continued from where he left in the Championship last season and has scored 10 goals from 26 appearances in the Premier League this term.

Quite unsurprisingly, Mitrovic’s heroics in a Fulham side that have struggled for goals have caught the eyes of Spurs. The Serb has not only scored 10 goals but he has created a total of 25 chances as well, more than the likes of Harry Kane and Marko Arnautovic and just three less than Sadio Mane. To add to that, he has been in scintillating form for Serbia in the UEFA Nations League, scoring 6 goals from 6 games.

Having failed in a bid to land Mitrovic in January, Spurs should reignite their interest in the 24-year-old next summer and submit a fresh offer to lure him away from west London in a bid to strengthen their squad.

The Lilywhites have enjoyed a successful campaign under Mauricio Pochettino despite their failure to add any fresh faces to the squad this season. Tottenham have finished in the top three in each of their last three seasons in the Premier League but lack of depth and quality in their reserves has prevented them from mounting a serious challenge for the title.

The over-reliance on the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son for goals has cost the Lilywhites dear at times. Vincent Janssen doesn’t seem to have a future at the club any longer while Fernando Llorente,33, is at the twilight of his career. Lucas Moura has done a pretty decent job as the spearhead of the attack in times of crisis but Tottenham need a specialist No.9 as a back up for Harry Kane to take the pressure off his shoulders.

Mitrovic struggled to make an impact at Newcastle due to his poor temperament and one-dimensional style of play. However, the Serb has worked on his flaws and has emerged as a much more well-rounded centre-forward this season. He was all about brute force in his earlier days but the 24-year-old has added a lot more to his game in terms of hold-up play, passing and movement off the ball.

To sum it up, Mitrovic has shown enough promise to play for a top-six club and he is likely to be put up for sale by Fulham if they face the drop this season. Irrespective of what the future holds for the Cottagers in the Premier League, Spurs should go all out to sign the Serbian powerhouse ahead of the upcoming season.
