Why Tottenham should sign Ben Chilwell from Leicester City

After not being able to sign a single player in the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur are now facing the heat. The month of September is here and the games will come thick and fast. Furthermore, they have been drawn in a tough group in the Champions League, which consists the likes of Barcelona and Inter Milan.

Along with this, Spurs also have to tackle the Carabao Cup, meaning Pochettino’s men virtually play three games a week from now on.

For such a tight schedule, adequate squad depth will be required. For the left-back position, Spurs have Ben Davies and Danny Rose in their squad. But with Express linking the latter with a transfer out of Spurs, the club must look for a cover for the former.

The Telegraph reports that the club are keeping close tabs on Ben Chilwell, Leicester City’s young left-back. After Luke Shaw’s recent injury against Spain, Chilwell was called by Gareth Southgate for national team duty. He made his debut coming off the bench, as England defeated Switzerland 1-0 in an international friendly.

Chilwell has also started all four Premier League games for Leicester City so far, pushing veteran Christian Fuchs to the bench.

The 21-year-old won Leicester’s academy player of the year award during the 2014/15 season. He was promoted to the first-team squad by manager Claudio Ranieri but he didn’t receive much game time as the Foxes chased their first-ever Premier League title.

Chilwell then made his full Premier League debut on the Boxing Day clash against Everton, during the 2016/17 campaign. Last season, he played 32 games in all competitions, helping Leicester finish ninth in the league.

Conclusion

The report also suggests that the 21-year-old has been on Arsenal and Liverpool’s radar. So, it won’t be easy for Spurs to sign the player. For this reason, they should look to sign him in the winter before any potential suitor arrives.

In any case, a move away from King Power Stadium is not a given. After all, the Foxes have shown that they are no pushovers when it comes to selling their best players to other big clubs in the Premier League.
