Daniel Sturridge would be the perfect understudy to Harry Kane at Spurs

According to ESPN (h/t Daily Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur have lined up Liverpool and England forward Daniel Sturridge as a potential option to bolster their squad next summer, with Mauricio Pochettino on the lookout for an understudy to Harry Kane.

The 29-year-old has been down the pecking order at Anfield for quite a long time, with Jurgen Klopp favouring Roberto Firmino as the front-man. The English international has started only twice in the Premier League this term, playing a ridiculously low 273 minutes of first-team football over the course of 11 substitute appearances.

Sturridge made the move to Anfield in January 2013 from Chelsea after struggling for regular minutes at his former club. The 29-year-old quickly established himself as the team’s first-choice striker, accumulating 21 goals and seven assists in the 2013-14 season.

Despite showing incredible goalscoring prowess in his first full season, he struggled for form and fitness in the subsequent years, with competition for places resulting in the Englishman’s slip down the pecking order. Nevertheless, his figures for Liverpool are really impressive for a top-class centre-forward, having amassed 68 goals and 25 assists in 153 appearances for the Reds across all competitions.

Sturridge is one of the very few players in the current era to have played for Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea – three of the top-six in the Premier League. To put things into perspective, his career has evidently come to a standstill due to lack of regular minutes and a move away from Merseyside would help him resurrect that. Hence, Tottenham should offer the hugely experienced English international an escape route.

Spurs have done exceptionally well on all fronts despite not making a new signing in the past two transfer windows. Pochettino’s side currently sit third in the Premier League and have also taken a huge step towards making it to the last-eight of the Champions League with a resounding 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg.

The Lilywhites have been one of the most consistent teams in the Premier League in recent seasons, but lack of proper transfer activity accompanied by inadequate depth in the reserves haven’t allowed them to compete with the likes of City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Having failed to land any of their potential targets this season, Spurs should be desperate to set the ball rolling in the summer transfer window. A seasoned campaigner like Sturridge would certainly be a good choice in their bid to find a back-up for Harry Kane.

Much of Tottenham’s goal scoring burden has been shouldered by the likes of Kane and Heung-Min Son, with the manager relying on the duo of Fernando Llorente and Lucas Moura to fill in the void left by the absence of the first-team strikers.

However, relying on the 33-year-old Llorente isn’t a long-term solution, suggested by the Spaniard’s age. Hence, a replacement is required. And Sturridge has all the attributes to enrich the club’s attacking resources.

The 29-year-old not only has the pace, movement and the skills to get in behind the opposition’s backline, he is equally good in the air as well, making him a genuine threat from set-pieces. Hence, it would be a virtual no-brainer for Spurs to strike a deal for the out-of-contract English international ahead of the upcoming season.
