Why Tottenham must plot a summer swoop for Norwich City’s Max Aarons

According to Football Insider (h/t Daily Star), Tottenham have made Norwich City’s Max Aarons their top target in the summer as they look to reinforce the right-back position.

Max Aarons, 20, has been a regular fixture at Carrow Road this season, playing 26 games for Daniel Farke’s side so far. He played a key role in the club’s promotion from the Championship the last term. The right-back contributed with two goals and six assists in 41 appearances as the Canaries won the Championship title.

That productivity has been harder to come by during the current campaign, though. Nevertheless, Aarons has not only become a Premier League regular but has also broken into the England Under-21s side this season. With the Canaries battling relegation, it remains to be seen what happens in terms of their best players at the end of the season if they drop back to the Championship.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have struggled defensively throughout the 2019/20 season. They have conceded 39 goals in 28 games, which simply isn’t good for a side competing for a top-four finish. The north London outfit need a central defender for different reasons.

Jan Vertonghen is out of contract at the end of the season while Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth have underperformed this season. Japhet Tanganga has got off to a decent start to his career at Spurs but he is too young to be relied upon in big games.

In addition to a centre-back, Spurs also need a new right-back. The north Londoners never replaced Kieran Trippier last summer, with the England international joining Atletico Madrid, leaving Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters as the only options at right-back. But Aurier is the only right-back option Mourinho has at his disposal after Walker-Peters joined Southampton on loan in January until the end of the season.

Thus, it’s a no-brainer for Tottenham to recruit a new right-back this summer and they must go for Max Aarons.

Aarons has been a true bright spot for the side that have been in the relegation zone since October. The Norwich academy graduate claimed his first assist from open play against Leicester City last week, having previously won the penalty which Teemu Pukki converted in the 2-1 defeat to Spurs a month ago.

Verdict

Tottenham need to get back to their best and have to bring in defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window. Addressing the right-back area is a must and thus, Spurs must make a move for Aarons.
