Two key positions Liverpool should boost this January

Things are pretty rosy in the Liverpool garden right now. Champions of Europe, world champions and in a wonderful position to end their three-decade wait for an English league title, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds could not have asked for a better start to 2020.

Clear at the top of the Premier League, and with a testing Champions League last-16 clash against Atletico Madrid on the horizon, Liverpool will have plenty of chances to add to their silverware collection.

Here are 2 positions Liverpool must look at strengthening in the January transfer window.

Goalkeeper

The Reds were hit with an injury blow between the sticks in their Premier League opener against Norwich when Alisson Becker picked up a calf injury while taking a goal kick. Summer signing Adrian subsequently took the Brazilian’s place and is likely set for a sustained run in the first team, but Jürgen Klopp’s options are thin beyond that.

Simon Mignolet plays for Club Brugge and Karius is on loan at Besiktas. Come January, Klopp must look at signing a back-up keeper to Alisson with tough fixtures ahead. With Liverpool fighting for the both the Premier League and Champions League, they need back-up options in case of suspensions and injuries.

Manchester United have Lee Grant as their third choice behind De Gea and Romero while City roped in Scott Carson to compete with Ederson and Claudio Bravo. Liverpool must bring in an experienced goalkeeper as a backup in January.

Centre-Back

Although Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Fabinho are closing in on a return to action, which would remove a lot of the pressure on his defence and midfield, Liverpool need a backup centre-back to provide backup to Virgil Van Dijk.

Joel Matip and Lovren have been plagued by injuries and Joe Gomez has often been deployed in that position. But, the youngster is inexperienced and tends to make the odd mistake. Liverpool must sign another solid defender in the transfer window as they are alive in the Champions League as well.

Liverpool brought in a centre-back, Steven Caulker, on loan during Klopp’s first January window at the club, and it would not be a surprise if they were to do something similar this time around.
