Why Ola Aina would be a good signing for Fulham this summer

According to reports from Sky Sports, Fulham are very close to finalizing a deal for Ola Aina from Torino. With the rigors of the Premier League in mind, Fulham are looking to bring the former Chelsea defender in an initial loan deal which can be made permanent later for £11million.

Profile

Ola Aina is a 23-year-old Nigerian right-back who currently plays for Serie A side, Torino. Aina started out his career at Chelsea’s academy in 2013 and after plying his trade for the youth sides, he was finally promoted to the first team but couldn’t get any games.

It was only in 2016 that he was handed his debut in a professional game. However, he made just 6 appearances that season. The following season, he was loaned to Hull City and went on to play more than 40 times throughout the season.

After returning, he was sent out on loan again, this time to Torino. His performances in 2018-19 resulted in Torino making his transfer permanent in 2019. He played 32 out of 38 games last season. The player is also an established player in his national team, collecting 17 caps over the last three years.

It was almost baffling as to how Chelsea let him go despite him showing so much potential while on loan at Hull and Torino.

Is it a sensible move for Fulham?

The club have been smart in this transfer window when they bought Anthony Knockaert, Antonee Robinson and Harrison Reed. They have also brought Mario Lemina on loan.

With Denis Odoi being on the wrong side of 30, it would be a good move for the club to bring in Ola Aina to compete with Steven Sessegnon for the right-back role.

Ola Aina also represents a versatile option who can play on the other side as left-back and higher up the right-hand side as a wingback.

Verdict

A loan-to-buy deal for a reported £11million feels like a good deal. Fulham are getting a player who has been a part of the Premier League for a long time. He has made a name for himself in the last two years in Italy as a promising defender who can play in multiple positions.

His experience would definitely be an important asset for the team, as the club will hope they can have a longer stay in the Premier League, unlike last time when they were relegated after just one year.
