Daniel Ricciardo took the lead in the very first lap, and ended up winning the 2021 Italian GP at Monza

Daniel Ricciardo finally ended McLaren’s winless drought that lasted almost 9 years, by winning the 2021 Italian GP.

The Australian driver, who had never won a race since Monaco 2018, started in P2, alongside, Max Verstappen (P1).

Ricciardo took the lead in the very first seconds of the race, once it was lights out, he never gave up his lead again (excluding pit stops).

His lead however was in danger, when Hamilton appeared to have virtually gotten the lead following the first pit stop. However, the Mercedes driver collided with Max Verstappen right after exiting the pit lane.

It was Ricciardo all the way after that. This was also his first podium for McLaren, let alone first place.

Daniel Ricciardo gives McLaren’s first win in almost 9 years

Following his victory at Italian GP 2021, Daniel Ricciardo gave McLaren their first-ever win in almost 9 years.

Their last win was back in Brazil 2012, which was won by Jenson Button.

Overall, it was a brilliant day for McLaren, taking P1 and P2, as Lando Norris, finished a close second.
