Man United Opinion: Denzel Dumfries would be a cheaper and more affordable alternative to Wan-Bissaka at £25 million
According to Metro, Man United have been credited with an interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch international right-back Denzel Dumfries, with the report claiming that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to add another right-back to his ranks this summer.
The 23-year-old’s consistently impressive performances in the Eredivisie have caught the eye of the Red Devils’ scouts and they are urging the club to make a move for the highly-rated right-side defender, the Metro understands.
Man United are in the market for a new right-back this summer and Crystal Palace starlet Aaron Wan-Bissaka is understood to be the club’s No.1 target. However, the Red Devils have already had a £40 million offer for the 21-year-old turned down by the Eagles, with reports suggesting that Palace are holding out for a fee in the region of £60 million for the English youth- international. Dumfries, who joined Eredivisie heavyweights PSV Eindhoven in a £5 million deal from Heerenveen last summer, is currently valued at £25 million by his current club. Taking the current market scenario into consideration, that price tag is unlikely to be too much of a concern for a club of United’s stature and it is hardly a surprise to see the Red Devils monitoring one of the brightest defensive prospects in the Netherlands.
The 23-year-old was an ever-present at the back for Eindhoven this past season and contributed with 4 goals and 7 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions, with his impressive displays earning him a place in the 2018-19 Eredivisie Team of the Season. Dumfries also featured regularly at right-back for The Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League this year, as Ronald Koeman’s side finished runners-up to Portugal.
A youth product of amateur Dutch outfit BVV Barendrecht, Dumfries joined Sparta Rotterdam in the Eerste Divisie (Dutch second-tier) in 2014 and spent three seasons over there, helping his club secure promotion to the Eredivisie before joining Heerenveen in 2017. His form at Heerenveen caught the eye of PSV, who swooped for him just a year later.
To put things into perspective, Man United have every reason to look at Denzel Dumfries as a potential transfer target for the summer, given that the Dutchman has shown a lot of promise in the Eredivisie in recent years. A full-fledged international for the Netherlands, the 23-year-old is only going to get better with time and one would expect him to get to grips with the English game in due course of time.
It is a no-brainer that the Red Devils need to bring in radical reinforcements at the back after enduring a torrid time defensively last season. A new centre-back is expected to be high on Solskajer’s wishlist for the summer but the Norwegian also needs to prioritise the signing of a right-back to replace former club-captain Antonio Valencia, who has been released by the club.
Ashley Young showed numerous times over the course of the previous campaign that he is no longer good enough to play as the first-choice at Old Trafford and United need to bolster their backline with some fresh blood before the next season gets underway.
The Red Devils have the services of Diogo Dalot, of course, but he is yet to nail down a spot in the first-team, and given that the Portuguese starlet is still very much in the developmental stage of his career at 20, United need to bring in a more experienced option at right-back.
Denzel Dumfries certainly fits the bill and his well-rounded attacking and defensive attributes coupled with his talent and potential make him a lucrative option for United.
Blessed with the qualities of a modern-day offensive-minded full-back, the 23-year-old excels with his ability to contribute to the attack with powerful driving runs and intelligent passing up front, whilst also possessing the awareness, agility and sharpness to deal with the transitions in play. To add to that, his exceptional aerial prowess and dribbling skills make him a more complete package, both in terms of defence and attack.

United have already completed the signing of Swansea City starlet Daniel James this summer, a move indicative of the fact that the Red Devils are looking at young and talented players in the market.
Dumfries certainly falls in that bracket and Man United should look at him as a cheaper and more affordable alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, given that Palace’s valuation of the youngster looks completely outrageous, to be honest.
