Newcastle United Opinion: Magpies should move for Francois Kamano this summer

Prior to the January transfer window, a report from French news outlet RMC Sport claimed that Southampton were interested in signing Francois Kamano from Bordeaux. However, a move to the Premier League failed to materialize for the Guinean international and the 21-year-old continued to flourish in Ligue 1.

Kamano broke onto the scene with Bastia in the 2014-15 season, registering 4 goals and 3 assists in Ligue 1. After a decent run of form in the following season, Bordeaux snapped him up in 2016 and Kamano has proven himself to be a sensational signing for the French giants, accumulating 27 goals and 14 assists from 117 competitive appearances in all competitions.

The 21-year-old has been in prime form this term as well, amassing 11 goals and 4 assists from 41 appearances. Kamano played a pivotal role in Bordeaux’s Europa League qualification campaign and also netted once in the group stages.

Standing at 5ft. 9 inches, Kamano might not be the most physically imposing attacker but the Guinean, with his pace and power, can be quite deceptive for the opposition defences. He is someone who believes in direct football, taking defenders on and beating them with his pace, dribbling skills, raw power and determination.

Although he started off as a right-winger in his earlier days at Bastia, Kamano has been used mostly on the left side of the attack this term, which has allowed him to cut inside and play as an inside forward at times.

Blessed with a good eye for goal, Kamano not only has the shooting ability to test the goalkeeper from range after cutting inside with pace but knows how to link up with his teammates as well.

The Guinean also has a penchant for making surging runs into the penalty area, which not only gives him a better chance of scoring goals but also draws the defenders away from their positions.

To put things into perspective, he would certainly be a good signing for Southampton next summer if the Saints reignite their interest at the end of the season but Newcastle can bag a massive coup if they manage to beat off competition from their Premier League rivals to land Francois Kamano.

The 22-year-old is still in the developmental phase of his career but he has already shown strong signs of excellence and move to Tyneside in the summer can work wonders for the youngster.

The Magpies have overcome the relegation threat after a torrid start to their campaign but they should look to challenge for a top-ten finish next term.

January signing Miguel Almiron has shown promise but he is yet to adapt fully to the Premier League, whilst Ayoze Perez has enjoyed an upturn of form at a crucial stage in the season.

Salomon Rondon has been a key contributor with his goals up front but Newcastle need to get a few underwhelming performers off their books im the summer to add fresh faces.

The likes of Joselu, Christian Atsu and Yoshinori Muto hasn’t done enough to justify their selection and someone like Kamano, with his versatility of being able to play on either side of the pitch, should increase competition for places and add depth to the squad.

Furthermore, Kamano’s flair and sharpness on the ball would add a bit more cutting edge to Newcastle’s attack, whilst his blistering pace can be an asset to Benitez’s system.
