Why next season could be a breakthrough for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers
According to a report from Sky Sports, Calum Chambers has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal. Since Arsene Wenger’s departure, Unai Emery seems to have brought in a sense of freshness at the club. He has been quite active in the ongoing transfer window as far, wrapping up deals left, right and centre.
Having already signed the likes of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichsteiner, it looks like the manager is keen to hold onto Chambers as well.
Although Arsenal endured a lacklustre season which saw them finish out of the top-four yet again, Chambers was one of their brightest lights. The 23-year-old appeared 24 times for the Gunners last season and he played an important role for the club in the latter half of the campaign.
With a managerial change, there were doubts about his future but with the new and improved contract, it looks like the youngster does have a future under Emery after all.
And considering the number of changes the former PSG boss has already brought about it, the next season could be a breakthrough campaign for Chambers. Since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium from Southampton in 2014, the player has made just 83 appearances in all competitions.
Given his defensive skills and technical prowess on the ball, surely the centre-back deserves to play more often. And now, armed with the confidence of signing a new deal and with a new manager at the helm, Chambers could truly work wonders.
He has a fair amount of experience as well, having spent a loan spell with Middlesbrough in the 2016/17 season. He failed to save them from relegation but he put in a slew of fine performances.
In fact, his displays last season were quite promising as well. But now, he has a gigantic task ahead of him. He must compete against the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Papastathopoulos for a starting spot at the heart of the defence.
However, if Chambers continues to impress like he did in the previous season, suffice to say that he has a bright future ahead of him.

Of course, at 23 years of age, he is far from the finished product and Emery must polish him further. But the new deal has come at a great time for him and it should provide him with the required boost to break the shackles and take the Premier League by storm next season.
