Everton should try to sign Vincent Aboubakar in January

Along with Moussa Marega and Yacine Brahimi, Vincent Aboubakar was a part of the three-man all-African trio that helped Porto to their first domestic title in five years last season.

The Cameroonian international accumulated 15 goals and 4 assists from 28 appearances in the Primeira Liga last season and has hit the ground running this term as well, registering 4 goals and an assist from 6 appearances.

Aboubakar, who has 20 international goals for Cameroon, burst onto the scene at a relatively young age when he became the youngest player in Cameroon’s 2010 World Cup squad. In fact, he was the only player in the squad who was playing for a club in Cameroon at that time.

The 26-year-old spent time on loan at Besiktas in the 2016-17 season where he scored 12 goals and helped his team win the domestic title.

Standing at just a shade over 6ft. In height, Aboubakar is a physically imposing striker who has a playing style similar to his Porto teammate Moussa Marega. The Cameroonian international is not particularly known for his sound technique but he makes up any deficiencies with his strength, pace, dribbling and eye for goal.

As a matter of fact, he is not just a good goal scorer but he is an efficient assist provider too. A player with a good eye for a pass, Aboubakar can create chances for his teammates with subtle flick-ons and deft touches in the final third, creating space for the others to pull the strings.

However, his most eye-catching attributes are his tenacity, aerial ability and clinical nature in front of goal. While he is adept at putting away the chances that come his way, Aboubakar can also find the net from outside the penalty area with powerful long-range drives. Known for his aerial ability, the Cameroonian international can the ability to time his jump to perfection to beat the opposition to the aerial balls, making him a genuine threat from set-pieces.

To put things into perspective, he would be an ideal signing for Everton. The Toffees slipped down to 8th in the standings after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City this week and they need to add more firepower to their attack to reduce the burden on Richarlison’s young shoulders.

Richarlison started the season on the left-wing and was subsequently backed by Marco Silva to spearhead the attack to cover for the lacklustre displays of Cenk Tosun. The Brazilian has claimed 8 goals so far but he has let the team down with his finishing at times, documenting the need for a specialist centre-forward in the squad.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has netted thrice in the Premier League this season but he is still in the developmental stage of his career and is not quite the finished product who can rack up 10-15 goals in a season. Oumar Niasse, on the other hand, visibly lacks the quality to make a significant impact at the highest level.

Hence, an experienced and powerful striker like Vincent Aboubakar can do a world of good to Everton’s chances of securing a Europa League spot. That said, they should start pursuing an interest in him ahead of the mid-season trading period.
