Why Tottenham should avoid a move for Jovane Cabral

Tottenham are looking to make the most of this transfer window, as they aim to return to the Champions League. According to A Bola (h/t MSN), the London club have set their sights on Sporting Lisbon forward, Jovane Cabral.

West Ham and Fulham are the two other clubs who have shown interest in him. With a plethora of options in the wide positions, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Mourinho to go for another player who plays there.

Profile

Jovane Cabral is a 22-year-old winger who plays for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. He started his footballing journey at the U-17 side of Sporting in 2014 when he was brought in from Gremio Nhagar and progressed through the ranks.

Although his numbers for the youth sides weren’t great, he did make up for it with his performances for the senior side. In 52 appearances for the club, he has scored 10 goals and further assisted 11 (source – Transfermarkt).

Do Spurs need him?

While he has healthy numbers in front of goal, adding another winger in a team well stocked on the flanks makes little to no sense. Steven Bergwijn is currently the first choice on the right followed by the likes of Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela.

Other than the fact that Cabral will be seen as a squad option, there is no reason as to why Mourinho would press for the transfer to be completed. His ability to play on the left should be something Mourinho should look into.

Verdict

With so many players who can play in Cabral’s position, his transfer isn’t an absolute necessity. Spurs would be better served to go for a backup striker instead. Harry Kane is the only option they have who can spearhead the attack.

Cabral also doesn’t look like an upgrade to any of the players already in the squad and could well be a waste of resources in case he does make the move. He is highly unlikely to dislodge either of Son, Bergwijn, or Lamela, and might have to be content with a place on the bench, something that would halt his progress at just 22 years of age.
