Why Liverpool must avoid signing Aaron Ramsey at all costs

Aaron Ramsey’s contract situation has sent Arsenal into a turmoil. According to BBC, a four-year agreement was in place but before the final contract was drawn up, Arsenal pulled out. So, as things stand, Ramsey would be a free agent next summer or could even leave the club in January for a small fee.

The vultures have already started circling around as a recent report from The Mirror has claimed that Jurgen Klopp wants to lure the Welshman to Liverpool next year.

Ramsey arrived at Arsenal from Cardiff City in 2008 and was one of the brightest prospects in British football. Over the past few seasons, he has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Gunners. His best season at Arsenal was the 2013/14 campaign, where he scored 10 goals and assisted 8 more in the Premier League.

During Arsene Wenger’s last season, he scored 7 times and set up 8 more for his teammates. In 21 starts for the club last year, he made 1052 passes with an accuracy of 85% which also included 28 key passes. He also had 25 shots on target and completed 81% of his attempted dribbles.

Ramsey’s biggest contribution for Arsenal has been his exemplary performances in two of their last three FA Cup finals. In final against Hull City in 2014, Ramsey scored the winner in extra time to give Arsenal their first trophy in 10 years. He again supplied an FA Cup-winning goal, this time against Chelsea in 2017.

Despite his ability to arrive late in the box and score important goals, Ramsey wouldn’t be a great addition for Liverpool right now – and the main reason for that is Ramsey’s injury record.  The Welshman has had 15 different injuries in his Arsenal career so far, most notably the double leg against Stoke City in 2010.

He was never the same player again and small niggles like groin, hamstring and calf injuries in recent seasons have been frustrating for the player and the fans. In fact, the Welshman has never started all 30 games in a Premier League season in his entire Arsenal career.

In the last two seasons, he made only 34 starts for the club in the Premier League. Considering the intensity with which Klopp’s teams play football,  Aaron Ramsey could become all the more injury-prone.

Another reason why Ramsey wouldn’t be a great pick for Liverpool is that the Reds are already heavily stocked in the midfield. James Milner, GeorginioWijnaldum and Jordan Henderson are first-choice midfielders but the arrivals of Naby Keita and Fabinho in the summer, along with the presence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, will make it impossible for Ramsey to get into the first team.

The Mirror also stated that Juventus are monitoring the situation and a move to Italy might prove to be a great one for Ramsey. He is still only 27 and a switch to the Serie A, a league with lesser pace and intensity, could allow Ramsey to refresh his career.
