Crystal Palace Opinion: Eagles should not sign Jordan Ayew permanently
According to an exclusive report from Football Ghana, Crystal Palace are interested in signing Jordan Ayew permanently at the end of the season.
The same report claims that the Eagles are willing to fork out £4million to sign the 27-year-old Ghanaian international permanently, with manager Roy Hodgson regarding him as a useful back-up option.
Ayew arrived at Selhurst Park last summer on a season-long loan deal from Swansea City following the Swans’ relegation to the Championship. The 27-year-old has been used as a rotational option by Hodgson but he has failed to deliver the goods in what has been another season of mid-table obscurity for the Eagles.
The Ghanaian has netted only twice in all competitions this season and has assisted a further couple but he has clearly not made the sort of impact that Palace would have expected from him.
Ayew scored 7 goals for Swansea in the Premier League last season but he has scored only once from 18 appearances in the league this time around, returns which are quite meagre even for a mid-table or a relegation-threatened club.
Palace have had their fair share of problems in front of goal, with star striker Christian Benteke struggling for form and fitness. Connor Wickham has also spent large quarters of the season on the sidelines and hasn’t looked convincing enough even when he has been on the pitch.
Alexander Sorloth, who is currently on loan in Belgium, struggled to make an impact earlier in the season.
Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend have been forced to shoulder a lion share of the workload in the attacking third and that has clearly not worked in Palace’s favour.
While Zaha has shown a lot of fight and character and has managed to impress with some fine individual performances, Townsend has been too inconsistent and has let the team down on multiple occasions with his poor finishing.
Suffice to say, Palace are in dire need of bringing in attacking reinforcements in the summer if they want to avoid another mediocre season in the top-flight.
It has been quite evident for the past 2-3 seasons that the Eagles are just enduring life in the Premier League, something that needs to change at the earliest if they are to maintain their identity.
Jordan Ayew is not the worst of strikers but the Ghanaian doesn’t boast of a good enough goalscoring record in the Premier League. The 27-year-old played for Aston Villa in the top flight in the 2015-16 season before earning a move to Swansea but he clearly hasn’t lived up to his potential in English football.
Ayew is a hard worker who covers a lot of ground but he hasn’t got the quality to deliver the goods consistently, while his lack of end product is also something that should discourage Palace from making his stay permanent.

Palace should look at other options in the transfer market if they really want to improve their attack significantly. Bringing in quality players from across the continent or investing in some proven Premier League striker would be a better idea for the Eagles.
