Why West Brom should not make a move Troy Deeney
According to Daily Mail, West Brom have been offered the chance to sign Watford captain Troy Deeney.
The 32-year-old striker endured a difficult campaign last season as Watford got relegated after finishing second-last in the Premier League. Despite his growing age and Watford’s poor displays, Deeney led from the front like a skipper, scoring 10 goals from his 27 Premier League appearances.
Having served the Hornets for ten years, Deeney has been an influential figure at Vicarage Road since his arrival back in 2010. With 133 goals from a total of 398 matches for Watford in the last decade, he has been one of Watford’s most consistent and best players in recent times.
However, the veteran striker’s future at Watford remains a question mark currently. Deeney has now been forward as an option to West Brom boss Slaven Bilic. (h/t Daily Mail)
Signing Deeney won’t help West Brom in the long run
West Brom, on the other hand, under Bilic secured Premier League promotion following their second-place finish in the Championship last season. One of the major reasons for West Brom’s success last season has been the form of their attacking unit which scored 77 goals in 46 league matches.
The bulk of West Brom’s goals came from the boots of their forwards Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu, who scored 10 apiece. Both Austin and Robson-Kanu are experienced players with enough Premier League experience under their belt.
However, they both are already 31 now and entering the back end of their careers, meaning West Brom could do with a young and new face in their attack when they return to the Premier League next season.
Apart from these two, the Baggies also have Danish striker Kenneth Zohore as a back-up. But the 26-year-old has been far from impressive. Having arrived at Hawthorns last summer, Zohore managed just three goals last season, proving that they need more firepower behind Austin and Robson-Kanu.
Nevertheless, the Baggies should avoid making a move for 32-year-old Deeney this summer.

He is already past his thirties and roping in another veteran to their already ageing attacking unit wouldn’t be the most sensible move. The Baggies should rather go for a young striker, who can lead them in the years to come.

Verdict
West Brom already have two veteran strikers in Austin and Robson-Kanu. Signing 32-year-old Deeney may offer them a stop-gap solution but won’t help them in the long run. Hence, they should ward off any interest in Deeney as it could only prove to be a waste of their time and money.
