Why is the French GP trophy in the shape of a gorilla?

The French GP is scheduled to take place from 22-24 July at Circuit Paul Ricard. But do you know why the French GP trophy is in gorilla shape?

The French GP gorilla-shaped trophy was designed by Richard Orlinski, an artist, and sculptor. The original gorilla trophy featured a Tricolore pattern, representing the French flag. The trophy for the previous edition in the 2021 race was plain white.

There is an interesting story as to why the trophy is in the shape of a gorilla. In Orlinski’s biography, it states that he is “inspired by the wildest animals and iconic objects that have marked their generation,” much in the same vein as Pop Art. Orlinski’s sculptures are large of wild animals. Some of the animals featured include bears, bulls, tigers, cobras, and even a T-Rex. Orlinski has two gorilla sculptures: ‘Wild Kong’ and ‘Wild Kong oil’.

The gorilla sculpture is based on King Kong. The trophy design displayed at the French Grand Prix is modeled on the ‘Wild Kong oil‘ sculpture. Back when Pirelli sponsored the podium, instead of holding an oil barrel above his head, Kong holds a Pirelli tire. However, that isn’t a thing from last year onwards as Emirates took over the sponsorship.
