There was quite a surprise in store for fans present at Spa to witness the qualifying round, as a flying man whizzed over the track just few hours before the session
Formula One fan were left stunned as a man was seen flying just hours before qualifying. The stuntman was seen standing on a flying device as he hurtled next to famous corners such as Eau Rouge and down the Kemmel Straight. French inventor Franky Zapata who started his run at the La Source corner conducted the display but social media videos caught him around most of the circuit.
Zapata has some experience after having flown around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in 2019. He unfurled a French flag during his trio three years ago in tribute to Anthoine Hubert who was killed in an F2 race over the Belgian GP weekend in 2019. Zapata has also flown around Paul Ricard ahead of the French Grand Prix and Le Mans ahead of the famous 24 hour race. He has also featured before Le Mans Moto GP events to thrill fans.
Carlos Sainz is set to start in pole position at the Belgian GP
Carlos Sainz took pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, the 14th round of the 2022 F1 World Championship, despite Red Bull’s Max Verstappen setting the fastest time in qualifying. Because of grid penalties for power unit changes, the qualifying order doesn’t truly reflect the starting grid as Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon, Zhou Guanyu and Mick Schumacher will all start at the back.
So Sainz will start ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso after the one-hour qualifying session, which is split into three segments with five cars each being knocked out in Q1 and Q2 before the top-10 shootout of Q3.
Ahead of the Belgian GP, Red Bull dominate the drivers’ championship standings as we prepare for the resumption of F1 action this weekend after the month-long summer break. Max Verstappen leads the standings with 258 points. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc occupies second place with 178 points. Perez lies in a third spot with 173 – ahead of George Russell, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.
