Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso is a two-time F1 World Champion – 2005 and 2006

History indicates that the opening-round FP2 leader has gone on to win the F1 World Championship title every year since 2017. If you are a staunch believer of trends and good omens, then it should ideally be Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who looks set to win his third F1 Championship title. The veteran driver was the leader of the pack in FP2 in Bahrain and subsequently finished the qualifying round in fifth place.

Lewis Hamilton (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) and Max Verstappen (2021, 2022) were the opening round FP2 leaders who went on to win the F1 World Championship titles in those respective editions. Alonso, who joined Aston Martin from Alpine ahead of this season, has been quite impressive during the practice and qualifying sessions in Bahrain. It remains to be seen if Alonso can eventually continue the trend or if someone else will finally break the myth.
