Aston Martin to develop its own F1 PU in 2026?

Aston Martin is reportedly assessing the possibility of developing its own Formula 1 power unit by 2026.

Aston Martin Technical Director Andrew Green recently admitted that the Formula 1 outfit is evaluating the likelihood of creating its own power unit by 2026. The statements came during the recent launch of the AMR22 a few weeks ago.

The British manufacturer currently runs its rivals’ Mercedes PU. The team also uses the eight-time Constructors’ Champions’ gearbox and rear suspension. However, in five years’ time, Aston Martin may have its own power unit when the engine regulations change.

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll is believed to be prepared to fund the development of the project. Most recently, Red Bull created its own engine division Red Bull Powertrains. This was after the four-time champions’ supplier Honda’s decision to leave the sport at the end of last year.

While Red Bull will continue to run Honda power units for the new era in F1, the team has already begun working on the PU which will come into play by 2026.

Aston Martin is now bound to follow suit after Red Bull’s decision to have its own engine by 2026. That year, F1 engine regulations will retain the current 1.6-litre V6 engines while removing the MGU-H component from the units.

Aston Martin Technical Director reveals plans to create PU by 2026

While speaking at the AMR22 launch, Green highlighted plans for Aston Martin’s longevity in F1 and hence the benefits of having its own PU. “I think going forward with our ambitions I think we’re definitely investigating power unit supply in the long-term. 2026 is mooted as a new power unit regulation and I think as a team we’d love to be involved,” he said.

Green further explained that Aramco could play a part in sponsoring the project as well, “We have Aramco now involved as a sponsor and I think conversations going forward in the next years, we’ll see. I’m sure we’ll be looking at it in great detail and understanding whether there’s a benefit to us moving in that direction.”

Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll had a pretty good pre-season running in Barcelona last week with their new AMR22s. The two Aston Martin drivers racked up a combined total of  296 laps. The duo will now head to Bahrain next week with the first GP of the 2022 season set to take place in less than three weeks’ time.
