The UFC recently signed former Bellator champion Michael Chandler and Vicente Luque claimed he could challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov
Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the greatest MMA stars of all-time. The Russian is 28-0 in his professional MMA career and has dominated most of his opponents.
While Khabib faces Justin Gaethje in his next fight, the UFC Lightweight champion might have another rival to worry about.
Michael Chandler was picked up by the UFC after becoming a free agent. He is a former Bellator champion and has had some great fights in the past.
Chandler is also the standby for the Khabib and Gaethje fight but a lot is expected from him.
His teammate, Vicente Luque, was speaking to WERMMA and highlighted how great a signing Chandler was for the UFC:
“For him, it’s awesome. For us as a team, it’s great. I think the UFC did a great move. He is a top 155-er, so it makes sense that he is right there to fight for the title.
“If everything goes as planned, he is not going to fight against one of those guys but I am sure he is going to fight a top name and get a win and go for the title after that.
“It makes sense. He was a dominant champion and had great wins over great guys. He had two or three battles against Eddie Alvarez, who later became the UFC champion so that shows he can definitely be a UFC champion and a dominant one.”
Ready to challenge Khabib
Not one has been able to come close to fighting Khabib and making him work. However, Luque backed Chandler to be that guy in the future:
“When you think about it, him against Khabib. It is such an amazing fight because Michael Chandler is an amazing wrestler. That is his background, so it’s not going to be an easy fight for Khabib.
“He is that kind of name that can trouble Khabib. That is what we want to see you know. He has been so dominant, we got to see somebody bring that challenge and I think Chandler is that challenger.”
Chandler held the Bellator Lightweight title three times and carries a 21-5 MMA record. It will be interesting to see who his first fight could be, but this is a fantastic signing for the UFC.
