Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should make a move for Thomas Meunier?

According to a report from French Football, Everton have made a provisional contract offer to Paris Saint-Germain right-back Thomas Meunier.

The Belgian, 27, has another year on his current deal and has made it clear he wants to remain with the French champions, but PSG will look to sell him this summer.

Given the right-back has only a year left at PSG, Everton should look to take advantage of the situation and sign Thomas Meunier before the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Everton boss Marco Silva will look to improve his squad in the transfer window after an eighth-placed finish in the 2018/19 season. The Toffees spent most of the season in mid-table, as they struggled to put away some of the smaller teams in the league. One of the club’s biggest problems this campaign was injuries, as several star players spent time on the sidelines.

One of them was Seamus Coleman, who suffered a nasty injury while on international duty in 2017 which kept him out of action for Everton until January 2018. He made a return in the 2-1 win over Leicester City and since then, the Irish international has again cemented himself as Everton’s no.1 right-back.

However, Coleman had few problems with injuries this term as well, but with him turning 31 in August and Silva planning to loan out young Jonjoe Kenny this summer for regular game time, it would be wise for the Merseysiders to start thinking about the future of Coleman and providing him with some real competition.

Thus, the Toffees should make a summer swoop for Thomas Meunier.

Meunier joined Paris Saint-Germain from Club Brugge three summers ago and has been a consistent performer for the French giants. He has played regularly at right-back and right-midfield for Thomas Tuchel’s side this season, though several injuries during the latter part of the campaign have hampered him.

A free-flowing, attacking full-back, the Belgian international loves to maraud forward and join his team’s attacks as much as he can. Meunier is fantastic at overlapping teammates and providing width to his team.

He is an able dribbler and a great crosser of the ball, something which could potentially see poachers like Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun thrive inside the box.

The former Club Brugge ace is also a competent dribbler and also works very hard for his side. Furthermore, Meunier’s versatility to play as a wing-back and as a right-sided midfielder, coupled with bags of European experience will make an asset at Everton if Silva manages to sign him.

Verdict

Thus, it’ll be wise for Everton to go all out for Meunier in this summer transfer window.
