Everton opinion: Callum Wilson can propel the Toffees to a top-6 finish

According to the Sun, Everton are plotting an audacious £35msummer swoop on Bournemouth for England international striker Callum Wilson.

Toffees manager Marco Silva is of the opinion that his team are only a striker short of breaking into the Premier League’s top-six, having already registered victories over the likes of Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal in the second half of this past season. (h/t Sun)

However, The Sun understands that Everton might be forced to cash in on Idrissa Gana Gueye this summer to fund a move for Wilson, with the manager also keen to sign loanees Kurt Zouma and Andre Gomes permanently.

Signing all the three aforementioned players is likely to cost Everton a fortune and the Sun understands that owner Farhad Moshiri has asked Silva to get rid of the deadwood in his squad, including Oumar Niasse, Cuco Martina, Sandro Ramirez, Cuco Martina, Cenk Tosun, Nikola Vlasic and Yannick Bolasie.

Callum Wilson has enjoyed another prolific season on the south coast for Eddie Howe’s side, registering 14 goals and 9 assists from 30 appearances in the Premier League this term.

He was one of the key reasons behind Bournemouth’s awe-inspiring start to the campaign, although the Cherries fell apart and undid most of their good work with a poor run of form in the latter stages of the season.

The 27-year-old, who made his full England debut last year, has a contract with Bournemouth until the summer of 2022 but the Cherries might be tempted to cash in on him should Everton put a massive offer on the table.

Signed for a fee of £3million from Coventry City back in 2014, Wilson has proven himself to be an absolute gem of a signing for the Cherries over the years.

He propelled Eddie Howe’s side to a promotion-winning campaign in the Championship in his debut season and subsequently made his mark in the Premier League as well.

Wilson has shown that he is capable of playing at the highest level and boasts of a terrific scoring record for the Cherries, having netted 58 goals in 148 appearances in all competitions, while setting up another 27 in the process.

To put things into perspective, it doesn’t require a rocket scientist to figure out that Everton are in desperate need of an out-and-out striker before the start of the next season.

The Toffees excelled under Marco Silva’s free-flowing aesthetic and attacking philosophy this past season and the manager deserves credit for bringing about a massive change at Goodison Park but the lack of a prolific striker has cost the club dear.

Richarlison, who was signed from Watford last summer, lived up to his massive price-tag, contributing with 13 goals, while Gylfi Sigurdson was arguably Everton’s most effective player in the final third with 13 goals and 6 assists to his name.

However, Cenk Tosun, who was supposed to spearhead the attack, drew a blank, and his deputy Oumar Niasse did no better before being shipped out on loan to Cardiff City in January.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin chipped in with 6 goals but one cannot help but feel that Everton need a prolific hitman up front to challenge for a European spot next term.

And Callum Wilson could be their best bet for that purpose. A fast, agile, athletic and hardworking striker, Wilson has the instincts of an out-and-out centre-forward and his presence up front should transform the Toffees into a more formidable unit in the Premier League.

The Englishman can rip defences apart with his pace, trickery and acceleration, while also possessing the intelligence and awareness to cause problems with his subtle movement in and around the penalty area.

Strong in the air, quick across the ground and clinical with both feet and head, Wilson is not just a dominant presence inside the box, owing to his goalscoring prowess but he is equally good at creating chances as well.

The 27-year-old has the technical ability to move the ball around quickly, dribble at pace, link-up with his teammates and string together some slick passing moves to make inroads in the opposition’s half, meaning that he is an excellent all-around striker perfectly suited to playing in the Premier League.
