Everton Opinion: Why Djene Dakonam would be a good signing for Everton

According to a report from the Marca, Everton are set to battle it out with Arsenal for Getafe defender Djene Dakonam this summer.

The Togolese international, 27, made 34 appearances for the Spanish side during the current campaign, helping the club finish in fifth place in the La Liga standings. He has been a consistent performer for Getafe and his displays have caught the eye of Arsenal, who will look to shore up their leaky defence in the 2019-20 campaign.

The report claims Everton have also joined the race to sign Djene Dakonam, although Getafe will not sell him for anything less than £31 million.

Both Everton and Arsenal are in dire need of defensive reinforcements ahead of the new campaign but it’s the latter that should win the race for Dakonam’s signature.

Djene Dakonam

Marco Silva received good backing from the Everton board in the transfer market last summer. Despite spending money on every area, the Toffees backline looked vulnerable throughout the campaign. The defending by the Merseysiders were appalling at times and that has been seen in the fact that they conceded 46 goals this past season.

Hence, Everton must look to sort out their backline first before moving onto addressing other areas. And they at least need a couple of defenders ahead of next campaign, as Kurt Zouma will return to Chelsea following the expiry of his loan spell at the end of the month, while veteran Phil Jagielka left Goodison Park earlier this week.

When Zouma returns back to Chelsea, Silva will be only left with the likes of Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate. Mina endured an injury-plagued first season at Everton and was unable to cement a starting role as a result. And as per The Mundo Deportivo, Everton have decided to send the big Colombian out on loan to Fenerbahce.

It’s bizarre if Silva has given up on Mina and plans to loan him out, considering that he is already short of defenders. Regardless of what happens, Everton must bolster their defensive ranks with the signing of Djene Dakonam.

In the past 12-18 months, the Togolese has taken his game to the next level in Spain and that’s why he has attracted interest from so many clubs. A centre-back with the speed and intelligence to cut out moves before they even happened, Dakonam will definitely solidify Everton’s backline. He isn’t blessed with a great height, yet can win aerial duels without much fuss.

The defensive qualities are there, which should be enough for the Toffees to make a move for the 27-year-old in the summer. Dakonam and Keane can form a solid pairing at the back, with young Holgate as a backup.

Verdict

Everton need defensive reinforcements to help them move further forward and Dakonam can do exactly that.
