Everton Opinion: Why David Neres would be a brilliant buy for the Toffees?

According to a report from the Telegraph, Everton and Arsenal are interested in signing Ajax star David Neres this summer.

The Brazilian was signed by Ajax from Sao Paulo and made his debut for the Dutch club in February 2017. The nippy winger, 22, was spectacular for Ajax this season, contributing 12 goals and 15 assists in 50 matches in all competitions.

Manchester United and Chelsea are also believed to be interested in the 22-year-old, who is expected to cost at least £34.5m this summer, the report adds.

David Neres has a contract at Ajax until 2022 but, with the progress he is making and the attention he is getting, it won’t be a surprise if he ends up leaving the Dutch champions this summer. That being said, Everton must do everything possible to beat their Premier League rivals and land Neres.

Everton signed Theo Walcott from Arsenal in January 2018 but the 30-year-old has failed to live up to the expectations of the Goodison Park faithful. He has produced very little for the Toffees this past season, regardless of enjoying full backing from manager Marco Silva.

Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson were the club’s chief contributor of goals in the 2018/19 and have seemingly nailed down a place in Silva’s starting XI next term.

Bernard blew hot and cold in his debut Premier League campaign. While he is expected to be given another season to showcase his quality, one cannot help but feel that the Merseysiders need a more lethal and creative right-winger if they are to challenge for a European spot next term.

To put things into perspective, Everton would do a brilliant job by signing Neres from Ajax. The 22-year-old did struggle in the 0-0 draw with Venezuela in the Copa America on Tuesday, but he still could be an appealing addition to Silva’s squad.

A nippy and creative left-footed player noted for his superb turn of pace, quick acceleration, silky dribbling skills, exceptional close control, and exquisite vision, Neres can be a menace for defences in the Premier League. His flair, agility and movement make him a threat both on and off the ball.

The 22-year-old is also a good crosser of the ball and a composed finisher in front of goal, which was chiefly highlighted this season in the Champions League.

Neres’ addition would not only bolster the Toffees’ attack but also add depth to the squad. Squad depth is an important aspect of any team and thus, signing the Ajax star certainly makes a lot of sense for Silva’s Everton.

Verdict

Neres fits the billing perfectly at the Goodison Park and the Toffees could have a real gem on their hands if the Brazilian winger goes on to fulfill his potential in the years to follow.
