Who is Melissa McCarthy playing in the Little Mermaid?

Melissa McCarthy shows off her singing talent as Ursula in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.” In a newly released clip from the film, the actress delivers her version of the sea witch’s famous ballad, “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” The classic, originally sung by the late actress Pat Carroll, was written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

While appearing on “Good Morning America” last month, McCarthy spoke about singing in the upcoming film. “To walk in anything Pat Carroll has done, you’re already just like, let me just try to do it some justice,” she said. “It was so fun though,” she continued. “Because it is not my forte for sure, so I really nerdishly practiced really hard, and getting to sing with that orchestra was – I mean, I think it’s a once in a lifetime thing. It was ridiculously fun.” “The Little Mermaid” arrives in theaters on May 26.

What else did Melissa McCarthy have to say about “The Little Mermaid”?

When asked what it was like to play Ursula, McCarthy said that it took time to “digest” she was getting the opportunity.

I think it took quite a while for me to kind of digest that,” McCarthy said. “Like, I was actually going to get to play Ursula, which seemed like a fever dream. My girls were a little like, ‘What does that mean?’ And I was like, ‘It means I’m gonna play her.’ And they’re like, ‘In what way?’ We all went to see it about three weeks ago and my kids at the end turned around. They were like, ‘Okay, that’s what you meant.’

McCarthy also discussed the process of becoming a Disney villain, and the “extremes” of a character like Ursula. “[Ursula] is just bigger than life,” said McCarthy. “So then to kind of have to live with her for that long and really think about, like, what is she afraid of? What is she insecure about? By the end, I really fell in love with her in such a different way.”
