Hong Kong’s iconic singer CoCo Lee has passed away at the age of 48. The singer and actress, known for her appearances in numerous albums, movies, and television shows, died on July 5, 2023. Her sisters made the announcement of her death on social media.
According to her sisters, CoCo had been battling depression for the past few years and had attempted suicide on July 2, 2023. She was hospitalised but slipped into a coma and despite the efforts of doctors, she could not be revived. In their statement, her sisters acknowledged that this year marked the 30th anniversary of Lee’s singing career, during which she received countless accolades and produced hit songs.
“She has left a remarkable impression with her outstanding live performances,” the statement said. The social media post also highlighted CoCo’s tireless efforts to open doors for Chinese singers in the international music industry. “She wholeheartedly represented the Chinese people. We are proud of her!,” the statement expressed. The post requested privacy from fans of the singer during such a difficult time.

Born in Hong Kong, CoCo’s music career took off after she won a singing contest following her high school graduation. Her success led to fame throughout Asia in the 1990s, with millions of album sales in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. She gained recognition from Disney when she was chosen to voice the character Fa Mulan in the 1998 film ‘Mulan’.
