Infinity Pool is a 2023 science fiction horror film, directed by Brandon Cronenberg. About the plot
Novelist James Foster and his wife, Em, visit Li Tolqa, a fictional coastal country, to attend a local festival. During their stay, James and Em are invited to spend time with Gabi and Alban, who are fans of James’s only published novel. The foursome decides to take a drive in the countryside despite being advised to remain on the resort compound.
While on the beach, Gabi surprises James with a handjob, and the group drunkenly drives back to the hotel where James accidentally kills a local man. Gabi advises James against calling the police since the country’s corrupt nature can put them in harm’s way. The next day, James is arrested and told that the penalty for his crime is death at the hands of the dead man’s firstborn son.
The Ending Explained
However, the country’s unique justice system allows the guilty to pay a hefty fee to have their clones killed in their place. James, who married into money, pays to have his clone killed before him.
During his extended stay, James meets a group of Western tourists who have paid to watch their clones being slaughtered. They encourage him to engage in criminal activities and mistreat resort staff. James is tricked into attacking a clone of himself and realizing the gravity of the situation, he attempts to escape. Gabi’s group abducts him, and she shoots him in the leg when he tries to flee.
After experiencing hallucinations and collapsing at a farm, James is ordered to kill his duplicate. He kills the clone and is rewarded with Gabi exposing her breast. The following day, James decides to remain alone at the deserted resort.
The theme of the Infinity pool
Infinity Pool examines how a lack of accountability results in careless conduct. The movie follows Gabi and her affluent associates who travel abroad to commit offences without facing repercussions. The story raises doubts about whether accountability is the only deterrent to prevent individuals from committing heinous acts.
James, who married into wealth, becomes intrigued by the idea of avoiding consequences and joins Gabi’s gang. His journey represents the average person, and the film provokes contemplation on the importance of accountability in society.
