Elias Pettersson began his hockey career playing as a youth and made his professional debut with Timrå IK in the Hockey Allsvenskan. In 2017, he signed a three-year contract with Växjö Lakers of the SHL after placing second in scoring in Allsvenskan. The Vancouver Canucks drafted him as the first Swedish player taken in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
As a junior player, Pettersson dominated the SHL in his rookie season, leading the league in points and +/-, with 56 points and +27, respectively.
