Dustin May Baseball Career

Dustin May grew up in Texas, graduating from Northwest High School and earning a scholarship to Texas Tech Red Raiders. But he chose against going to college for an early start to his professional career. In his debut season, he managed a 0-1 record with a 3.86 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 30 2⁄3 innings pitched. He played for both the Great Lakes Loons and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 2017, making it into the post-season California League all-star team a year later.

May’s call-up to the majors came in August of 2019, as the starting pitcher against the San Diego Padres. He pitched for 3 1⁄3 innings across two games in National League Division Series (NLDS) against the Washington Nationals, allowing one run on three hits. His big break came in 2020 when Clayton Kershaw injured his back in the 2020 campaign. May became the youngest opening-day starter for the Dodgers since 1981. His 99.1 mph-average four-seam fastball was the fastest four-seamer of any major league pitcher for the 2020 season.

He finished the season fifth in the Rookie of the Year voting and played three total innings and allowed three runs to score on five hits in the two championship games.

May’s pitching style is more reliant on his height and fluid moving style. The 6’6″ athlete throws with a three-quarter stance, lifting his leg up high before letting go. A two-seam fastball at 98 mph, a cutter, a curveball and a four-seam fastball are some of his most popular methods.

Here are his career highlights –

  • World Series champion (2020)
